What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional Radiology (IR) involves minimally invasive procedures using medical imaging for guidance. The procedures can be to help make a diagnosis, or provide treatment.

IR enables our highly specialised Interventional Radiologists (doctors) to treat a wide range of conditions without the need for major surgery, and in most cases without a general anaesthetic. Interventional radiology can have better outcomes for you, as often there is no need to be admitted to hospital and it is:

  • Fast.
  • Safe.
  • Well tolerated.
  • Cost-effective.
