What is SIS?

Saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS), also known as a saline ultrasound uterine scan, is a procedure that uses a small amount of saline (salt solution) inserted into the uterus to allow the lining of the uterus (endometrium) to be clearly seen on an ultrasound scan. It is a safe test that uses sound waves and a computer to create images, without the use of radiation.

Understanding your procedure

SIS helps doctors see the inside of your uterus and check for abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps, scarring, and abnormal shapes of the uterus.  It can also help determine if the fallopian tubes are open, identify ovarian cysts, and measure the antral follicle count which is a measure of the egg supply.

Before your procedure

The timing of your appointment is important. It needs to be after your period has finished, but before you ovulate – between days 7 and 12 of your cycle. Call on the first day of your period to book an appointment.

You may be given preventative antibiotics to take the day before, the day of, and the day after the SIS.

On the day

There is no special preparation necessary on the day, however, over-the-counter pain medication taken 30 to 60 minutes before the procedure can help reduce pain, please check with us before taking this. You may want to wear an absorbent pad in your underwear on the day of your procedure.

When you arrive:

  • Please check in with reception.
  • You will be asked to change into a gown.
  • You will be taken to the procedure room, and our radiologist will explain your procedure and ask for your consent before proceeding.

During your procedure

  • You will be asked to lie on the imaging table and made as comfortable as possible.
  • The radiologist will use a speculum to visualize the cervix, then place a fine catheter into the cervix. The speculum is then removed once the catheter is positioned.
  • Saline fluid is gradually introduced into the uterine cavity through the catheter. The ultrasound transducer, covered with a disposable sheath and coated with a special gel, is placed in your vagina to create real-time images of the inside of your uterus.

After your procedure

  • Any direct results will be discussed with you before you leave, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions.
  • Most women can resume normal activities immediately following the procedure.
  • You might have some cramps, light spotting and fluid leaking from your vagina.

Frequently asked questions

SIS can help diagnose uterine abnormalities, tubal obstructions, and other conditions that are important for assessing fertility issues.  It is a minimally invasive procedure that provides valuable information for your healthcare provider.

Sonohysterography can help to diagnose:

  • Uterine fibroids.
  • Uterine polyps.
  • Scarring inside the uterus.
  • Abnormal shape of the uterus.
  • Uterine cancer.

You might also be advised to have this test if you have symptoms that might be due to a problem with your uterus, such as:

  • Abnormal menstrual bleeding.
  • Infertility.
  • Repeated miscarriages.
  • An abnormal pelvic exam.

You can bring someone with you to your appointment, but they usually can't come into the procedure room.

The entire procedure usually takes about 30 minutes.

Some people experience mild to moderate cramping during the procedure, similar to menstrual cramps. Taking a pain reliever before the procedure can help reduce discomfort.
