Important Checklist…
Before attending your CT scan:
- Phone 0800 467 4260 to confirm your appointment.
- Remove any jewellery that may be over the area being scanned.
- Ensure you have completed any forms.
- Arrive at the time requested in case of any preparation.

There may be specific preparation required for your CT depending upon what area of the body is being scanned. Please read the information you have been provided with.
You may be asked to arrive early and drink some liquid that aids the radiologist in interpreting your images.
Remove any jewellery that may be over the area being scanned.
Please let us know if you have any allergies, pregnant or breast feeding.
You will be asked to lie on a cushioned table and the table will move you through the scanner. The scan itself is very short, usually taking only a few minutes.
You may be required to change into a gown depending on the body part being scanned.
Sometimes an injection of contrast media is needed to highlight areas of your body which can give more information to the radiologist, who is interpreting your images. This will be discussed with you if it is required.

CT uses ionizing radiation, however the risk associated with this is low.
If you are required to have an injection of contrast media, there is a very small risk of an allergic reaction. This will be discussed with you prior to your scan.
You can eat and drink as normal. If you have had contrast media we encourage you to increase the amount of water you drink for the remainder of the day. For a small number of examinations, we will ask you to remain within the department for a period of time for observation. You will be advised of this prior to your examination.
Your scan will be interpreted by a Consultant Radiologist and the report will be sent directly to your referring doctor. This will normally take 3-4 working days but can take longer in some cases.
Your referring doctor will discuss the results of the scan and explain what the results mean for you.
